01

Purpose of the Practical Guides

First Notification Practical Guides are designed to help readers prepare useful information, organise records and understand practical next steps. They support the same organisation-first philosophy as the First Notification apps, but every guide is intended to remain useful even if the reader never uses an FN product.

We aim to answer the question a reader actually came with, use plain English and provide structured steps, checklists or examples where they make the subject easier to act on.

02

Editorial ownership and authorship

Guides are published by the First Notification Editorial Team. We use an organisational byline rather than inventing individual writers, reviewers or professional credentials.

Where a guide has genuinely been reviewed by a named qualified professional, that review may be disclosed on the page. We do not imply professional review where it has not taken place.

03

Sources and research

For subjects where rules, safety or official processes matter, we prioritise primary and authoritative UK sources such as GOV.UK, NHS, regulators, professional bodies and recognised public-service organisations. Supporting links are included where they help readers verify current requirements.

We distinguish general organisation guidance from rules that can change. Readers are encouraged to check the current official source when timing, location, eligibility or a specific legal or professional requirement matters.

04

Writing standards

Useful firstAnswer the topic directly before introducing products.
Facts before assumptionsSeparate observable information from interpretation or opinion.
Plain EnglishAvoid unnecessary jargon, padding and exaggerated claims.
Practical structureUse clear headings, checklists, timelines and examples.
UK contextState when guidance is UK-focused and when requirements can vary.
Respect for privacyEncourage proportionate collection and secure handling of personal information.
05

Safety and professional boundaries

First Notification is a software company. Its Practical Guides do not replace emergency services or legal, medical, veterinary, insurance, financial, accounting or other professional advice.

Guides dealing with health, animals, road incidents, travel, business records or evidence are written to help readers organise information and prepare for conversations with the appropriate professional. They do not diagnose conditions, determine liability, guarantee insurance cover, establish legal rights or tell a reader to delay urgent help.

Urgent situations come first.

If a person or animal may need urgent help, or a road situation is unsafe, obtaining appropriate assistance takes priority over completing a checklist, taking photographs or searching for documents.

06

Review dates and updates

Guide pages show publication or review information so readers can see when the content was last checked. We review material when a product changes, an official source changes, a factual issue is identified or the guidance can be made materially more useful.

A changed date should reflect a meaningful review or update rather than an automated timestamp. Older material may remain available when it is still useful and accurate.

07

Corrections and reader feedback

We want factual errors, broken official links and unclear guidance reported. Where an error is confirmed, we correct the page and update the review information when appropriate.

To report an issue, use the First Notification contact page and identify the guide, the passage concerned and, where possible, the source supporting the correction.

08

Commercial independence and product references

Practical Guides may explain how an FN app can help organise records related to the topic. Those references are clearly presented as product information and do not change the editorial answer.

We do not publish invented testimonials, fabricated expert endorsements or paid placements disguised as independent editorial guidance. If commercial relationships ever materially affect a guide, they should be disclosed clearly.
