Preserve first, review second
Before repeatedly opening, trimming or sharing the file, make sure the original recording is safely retained. If the device is configured to overwrite old footage, protect or export the relevant event as soon as it is safe to do so.
Watch once without stopping
Your first review should be the complete sequence at normal speed. Note the broad timeline rather than trying to decide blame. Pay attention to junctions, signals, lane changes, traffic conditions and events that happen outside the centre of the frame.
Review the surrounding context
Then watch the period before and after the event. This may explain why a vehicle changed position, whether a signal had changed, or what happened immediately after. Avoid trimming away material simply because it seems unimportant at first glance.
Write observations separately
Create notes that identify the relevant timestamp and what you can actually see or hear. Distinguish a direct observation such as ‘vehicle enters lane’ from an interpretation such as ‘driver was aggressive’. This makes your record clearer and less likely to overstate what the footage proves.
Check recognised registrations against frames
If software has recognised a number plate, compare the result with the clearest available frame. Look for characters that could easily be confused. Keep any manual correction associated with the original recognition result rather than silently replacing the history.
Prepare only what the recipient needs
A police force, insurer, solicitor, employer or fleet manager may each ask for different material. Keep the complete original, then create copies or exports that follow the recipient’s instructions. Avoid public posting when a formal investigation or submission may follow.
